EHF Coaches Forum 2027: Worth €199 for a Club Coach?

A club coach’s guide to the EHF Coaches Forum 2027: confirmed programme, full-trip costs and when to book, wait or skip it.

Short answer: it is worth considering if your work includes coach development, leadership or player management—and particularly if your club or federation will help with the cost. If you are a self-funded club coach mainly seeking drills for your next practice, wait for the speakers, timetable and Pro Licence renewal conditions before booking.

The inaugural forum takes place at the University of Vienna Biology Building on 22–23 February 2027. The €199 ticket covers six keynotes, three panel discussions, Q&A opportunities, an evening networking event, snacks and coffee breaks, according to the official event page.

What the programme offers

The published format is a conference on one main stage. Its announced themes are:

  • the characteristics of a 21st-century handball coach;
  • handling pressure and failure;
  • building a learning culture and motivating players to learn;
  • the future of handball;
  • similarities and differences when coaching men’s and women’s teams.

These subjects could help with communication, player management and long-term programme design. They are broader than passing mechanics, defensive footwork or a ready-made small-squad session, however. As of 30 September 2026, the event page does not advertise court demonstrations, breakout workshops or practical sessions organised by age or playing level.

The most useful element for some club coaches may be access to other coaches. The programme includes Q&A time and a networking event on the evening of 22 February. That opportunity is easier to justify if you arrive with specific questions—perhaps about retaining teenage players, adapting practice for mixed ability or developing assistant coaches—rather than simply planning to collect contacts.

Book now if the fit is clear

Booking now is reasonable if at least two of these apply:

  • Your club, employer or federation will cover much of the trip.
  • You develop other coaches and can apply the ideas across several teams.
  • Leadership, learning culture or player motivation is a current priority.
  • You have specific problems to discuss with coaches from other countries or competitive levels.
  • The total cost is acceptable without relying on unannounced benefits.
  • Pro Licence renewal would add value once the conditions are confirmed for you.

The EHF says the forum will provide an opportunity for Pro Licence renewal, but it has not published the conditions. Its registration announcement says more details will follow. Do not assume attendance alone will renew your licence: confirm eligibility, credited hours, documentation and any follow-up requirements first.

Wait if the missing details affect your decision

As of 30 September 2026, the official page sets out the format and broad themes but does not name the six keynote speakers or give the daily start and finish times. It also does not state whether recordings or presentation materials will be available. Those gaps matter when you are comparing the content with travel costs or deciding whether two weekdays away from work are justified.

Waiting is sensible if:

  • you will pay for travel, accommodation and meals yourself;
  • your main need is court-based material for a small club squad;
  • licence renewal is the deciding factor;
  • you need confirmed timings before booking transport;
  • you need to confirm the presentation language or access to recordings;
  • you cannot accept the published cancellation terms.

The EHF registration page states that registration fees qualify for a full refund only when cancellation is requested within 14 days of payment. It says fees become non-refundable after that period, regardless of the reason. If your plans are uncertain, ask the organiser whether registration can be transferred before treating that as a fallback.

Calculate the full trip cost

Do not judge the forum on the €199 ticket alone. Add:

ticket + travel + accommodation + local transport + meals + lost work or coaching time

The official page lists the keynotes, panels, networking event, snacks and coffee breaks as ticket inclusions. It does not list accommodation, full meals or transport, so budget for those separately.

The venue is at Djerassiplatz 1, 1030 Vienna. The University of Vienna lists St. Marx S-Bahn station, Schlachthausgasse on the U3, and tram routes 18 and 71 among the public-transport options for the Biology Building. Accommodation on a direct connection may therefore offer better value than staying beside the venue.

Before paying, write down what would make the trip worthwhile. For example:

  • one coaching-management change you can test;
  • one useful contact or follow-up conversation;
  • one idea you can share with assistants or other club coaches;
  • any confirmed licence-renewal value.

If the current programme cannot plausibly deliver enough of those outcomes to justify the full trip cost, wait.

Turn conference ideas into a club trial

If you attend, prepare three live coaching problems. For each useful keynote or panel point, record:

  1. The claim: what is the speaker recommending?
  2. The observable change: what should players or coaches do differently?
  3. The constraint: what might prevent it working with your squad, hall or training time?
  4. The trial: what small change can you test within two weeks?

For example, “build a better learning culture” is too vague to take back to practice. A usable trial would be: during your next mixed-level practice, ask each player to name the passing cue they are working on, then check whether they recognise and use it in the final game.

Arrange a short debrief with your assistants before travelling and decide who will run each trial. That gives the forum a route into club practice instead of leaving the ideas in a notebook.

Verdict

Book now if the confirmed themes match your role, the networking has a clear purpose and the full trip cost is acceptable without depending on details that have not been announced.

Wait for the programme update if you are a self-funded club coach primarily looking for practical sessions. The speakers, daily timings and exact Pro Licence renewal terms could materially change the value.

Skip it if your immediate need is a bank of court-ready drills. Based on the programme published by 30 September 2026, this is a coaching, leadership and discussion forum—not a practical two-day court clinic.
