A Practical No-Resin Session for Better Ball Control

Start with the correct purpose-designed ball, then progress from controlled catches to passing, shooting and realistic pressure.

Effective handball training without resin starts with the correct purpose-designed ball and progresses from controlled catches to passing, shooting and realistic pressure. Use the ball players expect to meet in competition, keep baseline conditions consistent, and track handling and shooting separately. Treat the process as structured familiarisation—not a scientifically validated resin-free programme or a promise that performance will become identical after a fixed number of sessions.

Start here: set up a resin-free session correctly

Before the warm-up, check five things:

  • Confirm the rules: check the competition, venue and hall policies rather than assuming they match.
  • Ask about all grip aids: establish whether tape or any other substance is restricted.
  • Select the correct ball: use the appropriate purpose-designed resin-free size for the squad.
  • Inspect its condition: look for surface wear, contamination, damage or major differences between available balls.
  • Check inflation: follow the manufacturer’s range printed on the ball rather than applying one universal pressure.

Do not treat a conventional handball used dry as equivalent to a purpose-designed resin-free ball. IHF rules distinguish between balls intended for play with resin and without resin, including different circumference and weight ranges for corresponding size categories (IHF Rules of the Game).

Individual resin-free designs can also differ in surface, size and weight from a traditional ball. In one controlled comparison, the purpose-designed resin-free ball was smaller and lighter and had a different surface from the conventional ball tested with and without resin (2022 ball-comparison study).

Where practical, train with the ball type intended for the upcoming competition. The purpose is familiarisation: players learn how that equipment arrives in the hands, moves during a pass and leaves the hand during a shot. This does not prove that a particular model improves performance.

If the budget allows, use several balls of the same model, size and approximate condition. Avoid changing balls during a measured block unless one becomes unsuitable for use.

IHF specifications do not settle every local question. A league, youth category, tournament organiser, club or facility may apply additional or different policies. Check directly with the organiser and hall rather than assuming that a resin ban automatically answers whether tape or another grip aid is allowed.

Choose the correct resin-free ball

Apply the relevant competition rules first. For teams using the IHF resin-free specifications, the principal size ranges are listed below (IHF Ball Regulations).

For beginners, the regulations also provide specifications for size 0, size 00, non-inflatable squeeze balls and sponge balls. Regulated handballs must be round, have a leather or plastic casing and use outer material that is neither shiny nor smooth. The manufacturer’s permitted inflation range must be printed on the ball, and official IHF competitions require an appropriately approved ball (IHF Ball Regulations).

Inspect the actual ball rather than relying solely on an online label.

Matching the published dimensions is not the same as holding current approval. Nor does inclusion in a retailer’s resin-free category establish that a model carries the relevant seal. Verify the exact product and its current approval status separately, and check whether the event specifies a competition model rather than allowing any compliant ball.

Prepare multiple balls consistently when they will be used in the same drill. Players should not have to alternate unpredictably between a softer ball and a firmer one during a measured passing or shooting block.

Use this progressive no-resin training block

This progression is practical coaching guidance, not a research-validated resin-free programme. Move forward when handling remains reasonably stable, and return to an earlier stage when extra speed or pressure causes technique to collapse. There is no established number of sessions or weeks that every player needs.

Stage 1—controlled handling

Place players in pairs, three to five metres apart, with one ball per pair where possible. Begin with stationary two-hand catches and short passes. Use a fixed block—such as 30 passes—so results can be compared without extending the drill whenever a pair struggles.

Count clean catches and drops. Cue players to:

  • See the ball early.
  • Present relaxed hands.
  • Absorb the catch rather than slapping at the ball.
  • Avoid squeezing so hard that the shoulders and forearms become rigid.
  • Deliver a catchable pass to an agreed receiving area.

This gives players frequent contact with the ball without forcing speed before they understand its handling.

Stage 2—passing on the move

Mark two short lanes. Receivers move toward the ball, pass, and continue to the opposite marker. Increase either distance or pass speed gradually rather than changing both at once.

Record two errors separately:

  1. Inaccurate pass: the delivery misses the agreed receiving area.
  2. Dropped catch: the pass reaches that area, but the receiver does not control it.

A combined mistakes total cannot show whether the coach should address release direction or receiving technique.

With six players and half a hall, use three moving pairs or a triangular pass-and-follow pattern. Developing players can work over shorter distances while experienced players use the same pattern at greater pace.

Stage 3—decision pressure

Set up a 4v2 possession game in an approximately 10-by-10-metre square, or use 3v1 when only four players are available. The overload means an open option should exist. In the first rounds, defenders provide positional pressure without making full interception attempts.

Count turnovers and handling errors for each attacking group over a fixed period. Once attackers can scan and move the ball cleanly, allow active interceptions or reduce the playing area. Increase pressure because the players are ready, not merely because a timer has expired.

Stage 4—shooting

Begin with standing 7-metre target throws, then progress to 9-metre jump shots and position-specific finishes. Mark target areas rather than counting every goal as an accurate attempt.

For position-specific work, rotate players through passer, shooter and rebounder roles. Wings can finish from a marked approach lane, while backcourt players use a consistent run-up and release point. Record each shot type separately because standing throws, jump shots and positional finishes are different tasks.

Whenever results will be compared, repeat the recorded baseline conditions, including the ball and number of attempts.

Stage 5—game pressure

Add passive defenders first, then active defenders after passing and shooting remain stable at speed. In a half hall, use 3v3 or 4v4 and apply one clear condition—for example, three completed passes before shooting or a required change of position before the finish.

For developing players, shorten passing distances, reduce pace, enlarge targets or delay defensive pressure. Progress experienced players through movement, speed, scanning and decisions rather than introducing an unverified substitute grip aid.

A 90-minute club session template

This session can run in half a hall and scale across mixed ability levels. Mark separate lanes, possession areas and shooting stations before players begin. Handball is a contact sport, so use a progressive warm-up and introduce defensive pressure or contact gradually.

Without a goalkeeper, mark target zones and rotate retrieval duties. With a larger squad, divide the shooting block into two stations to avoid long lines. One station can run standing target throws while the other rehearses position-specific footwork; swap after ten minutes.

Measured blocks should use the recorded baseline conditions. Outside those blocks, adapt the session to player numbers and ability without treating every change as formal test data.

Measure adaptation instead of guessing

A short assessment sheet is more useful than asking whether the ball felt better after one successful sequence.

Use a simple perceived-control scale consistently:

  • 1: very little control; frequent uncertainty during catch or release.
  • 3: moderate control; generally manageable but inconsistent under speed.
  • 5: very high control; confident catch and release throughout the test.

Establish a baseline, then repeat the same protocol periodically. Record the ball, attempt count, distances, target areas, warm-up and approximate fatigue state. If something changes, note it rather than treating the tests as identical.

Standing 7-metre throws and 9-metre jump shots are recognisable controlled scenarios, but their results must remain separate because the technique changes as well as the distance. Improvement in one test does not prove improvement in the other.

Keep accuracy, velocity and perceived control as distinct outcomes. A faster throw is not automatically more accurate, and greater reported comfort may not immediately produce more target hits. Drops, inaccurate passes and possession turnovers should likewise remain separate from shooting results.

Avoid conclusions based on only a handful of attempts.

Troubleshoot common no-resin problems

These are practical coaching responses, not proven resin-free interventions.

The ball slips or players repeatedly drop passes

Reduce pass speed and distance temporarily. Restore early visual tracking, clear hand presentation and movement toward the ball. Once catches are clean, increase either distance or pace—not both together.

Players overgrip, tense their shoulders or release late

Return to relaxed close-range passing. Ask for a soft catch followed by a simple release before restoring power.

Passes keep breaking down

Separate delivery errors from receiving errors. If the passer repeatedly misses the agreed area, coach body alignment and release direction. If usable passes are dropped, focus on tracking, hand position and absorbing the catch.

Shooting accuracy declines

Compare the attempt with the recorded baseline before changing technique or equipment. Check the shot type, distance, target, approach, ball and fatigue state. Do not judge a standing 7-metre throw against a pressured 9-metre jump shot.

The whole team is struggling

Recheck the equipment before rebuilding everyone’s technique. Confirm the ball size, surface condition and printed inflation range. Establish whether players have been switching between different models or between purpose-designed resin-free balls and conventional balls used dry.

What the research says—and does not say

Available evidence does not support a universal claim that removing resin always reduces accuracy. It also does not show that purpose-designed resin-free balls always reproduce resin-treated performance.

A 2018 study tested 20 male Serbian Super League players using 9-metre jump shots, standing 7-metre throws and shots from playing positions. Each test involved eight shots at corner targets. Mean accuracy was significantly higher with resin in all three conditions: the reported comparisons were p = .001 for 9-metre shots, p = .006 for standing 7-metre throws and p = .024 for positional shots (2018 resin and shooting-accuracy study).

Those results apply to a small, male-only sample from one competition level. The experiment assessed controlled target accuracy, not long-term adaptation or match performance.

The 2022 comparison involved 29 semi-professional Costa Rican outfield players—18 men and 11 women—and three conditions: a conventional ball with resin, the same conventional ball without resin and a smaller, lighter purpose-designed resin-free ball. It found no significant difference in accuracy or effectiveness by ball type. Velocity effects varied by sex, distance, instruction and ball condition; in some male conditions, the conventional resin-treated ball produced higher velocity.

The findings do not necessarily conflict. The studies used different players, equipment and protocols. Crucially, the purpose-designed resin-free ball in the later study also differed in size, weight and surface. Its results therefore cannot isolate resin as the sole cause of any performance difference.

Both studies have practical limitations. Their samples were small and narrow, and testing took place without defensive opposition. The later protocol used only two throws for each combination of distance, ball and instruction, while its 7-metre and 9-metre tests involved different throwing techniques. Neither study establishes how long adaptation takes, whether a particular drill sequence accelerates it or whether controlled results transfer to match play.

Can players use tape instead of resin?

Do not infer permission from a resin ban. Confirm with the competition organiser and facility whether tape or any other grip aid is allowed. Players discuss tape informally, but that discussion is anecdotal and does not prove that tape improves grip or establish that it is permitted (player discussion comparing tape and resin).

How long does it take to adapt to handball without resin?

There is no established universal timeline. Players differ in previous resin use, skill, position, training frequency and the ball they are learning to handle. Use repeated assessments of catches, passing errors, turnovers, target hits and perceived control instead of promising adaptation within a fixed number of sessions.

Must every resin-free training ball have an IHF approval seal?

Not necessarily for ordinary club training; the rules applying to the session or facility determine what is required. However, matching the published dimensions or being marketed as resin-free does not prove that a model has current approval. Verify the exact ball and its status before using it in a competition that requires approved equipment.
